While living in the house, Dylan is visited nightly by a group of ghost children—previous victims of Bughuul. They lead him to the basement and force him to watch gruesome "home movies" of their own families being murdered in horrific ways, such as being eaten by alligators or electrocuted in a kitchen. The ghosts aim to desensitize Dylan so he will commit a similar murder to join their ranks.

In the 2015 horror sequel , the story follows Courtney Collins ( Shannyn Sossamon ), a mother who has fled her abusive husband, Clint, and moved into a remote farmhouse with her 9-year-old twin sons, Dylan and Zach .
