Following Japan’s unconditional surrender in August 1945, General Douglas MacArthur ordered the arrest of top-tier war criminals, including Tojo. On September 8, 1945, as American military police surrounded his home, Tojo attempted suicide by shooting himself in the chest. Paradoxically, the very forces he had fought—the Americans—saved his life.
